Site Description

This area is peatswamp forest with two lakes, one with an island (Pulau Besar). The flora is an excellent example of Shorea and Ramin swamp forests. It is an attractive area rich in wildlife with many endangered species.
Principal vegetation: 16,000 ha peatswamp forest, 4,000 ha freshwater swamp forest. |

Cagar alam Danau Bawah dan Pulau Besar is situated in east-central Sumatra, approximately 90 km east north of Pakanbaru or lies south of Siak Sri Inderapura. A minor roadway passes to the west.
From Pekanbaru take a bus (3-4 hours) or a boat along the river Siak to Siak Sri Inderapura (3-8 hours, depending on the speed of the boat). In Siak Sri Inderapura hire a jeep to the reserve. The trip is only possible during the dry season. |
