Site Description

One of the remotest areas of Indonesia, located at the eastern most of the archipelago. The entire area is relatively flat, up to only a few metres above se level. The Aru Tenggara is situated on the Sahul continental shelf. The proposed reserve encompasses all coastal and marine ecosystems in the south east region of Aru Archipelago. The whole Aru island system comprises raised coral reefs of quaternary origin, fringed by current living reefs. The marine area between islands is shallow (between 0.5 - 18m).
Principal vegetation: Mangrove swamps (10,000 ha) with genera Sonneratia, Bruguiera and Rhizophora. Sea grass beds (40,000 ha). |
