Site Description

A number of islands with an excellent range of coral reefs showing a good evolution of fringing reefs to barrier reefs to atolls. The most extreme island of the island group Pulau Moromaho is an important seabird nesting island. The area is important for dugongs, turtles and other marine life.
Reef structure and corals:
Coral cover is generally not high, and there is abundant sand, rubble soft corals and sponges. Inside the reef, there are extensive patches with high coral cover, consisting mainly of one or two species of Acropora. Off the islands of Binongko, there is an undisturbed coral reef terrace north of Taipabu, with abundant fish, octocorals, sponges and ascidians, but low stony coral cover; Porites is fairly abundant but forms small colonies.

Kepulauan Tukang Besi/Wakatobi Marine National Park is located in the extreme south east of Sulawesi.
Tukang besi can be reached by boat from lasalimu on Pulau Buton (3 hrs). To get to Lasalimu take the bus from Baubau, also on Pulau Buton. Baubau can be reached by boat from Ujung Pandang (15 hrs) or Kendari (5 hrs). |

A research was carried out at Tukang Besi islands during the Snellius II Expedition 1984. The islands have an important reef invertebrate fishery, itinerant divers coming from Butung island. |
