Site Description

A large area of rather flat peat swamps between the Ketapang Kepala and Menamang Kiwa rivers.
Principal vegetation: Peatswamp forest with Ramin (Gonystylus bancanus).
Based on Landsat imagery 1996, along the Kedangkepala river and Kedangrantau river, riparian forest occur.
More extensive peat swamp forest on Gambut Land System occur at the south-west of the reserve. However, the status of this area is production forest and not included within the reserve boundary. |

Muara Kaman Nature Reserve is located near the Perairan Sungai Mahakam site. It is also within the Mahakam lowland region. |

The site is reported to be the habitat for Proboscis Monkey (Nasalis larvatus). |
