  Site Description
The island consists of limestone with high (up to 325) cliffs. The width of the island from north to the south is 5km and 12km from west to the east. Most of the area is hilly and montainous. Flat areas cover only 1%. Several deeply idented bays on the northeast coast provide sheltered anchorages for visiting fishermen. Because of the limestone substrate the island is almost completely dry with no rivers and only a few natural ponds where animals may find standing water. Botanically the island is poor with Sterculia foetida and other drought resistant species being predominant. The north eastern side of the island is covered with Supatorium sp., and alang-alang. The main wetland type is mangrove. Principal vegetation: Rhizophora sp., Avicennia sp., Sonneratia alba, Lumnitzera sp., Xylocarpus sp. Coastal vegetation Barringtonia sp., Terminalia catappa, Calophyllum inophyllum, Sterculia foetida.
